Mondo Invites You to the Opening! New Street Art in Lasnamäe

On 26 May, a small crowd gathered by Pae park in Lasnamäe: hot Sri Lankan tea steaming from thermoses, cinnamon buns waiting on the table, and a blue wall about to take centre stage. To the sound of Ukrainian singer Anna Fyl’s guitar and TogoSunny drummer Senam Tsogbe’s djembe, Viktoria Berezina’s new street art piece “The Voice of Lake Victoria” was unveiled — applause rippled across the grass as the artist and Hilda Flavia Nakabuye, who inspired the work, spoke before the wall.

On 26 May, Mondo invited Lasnamäe to the opening of a new street art piece on the garage wall by Pae park. Ukrainian war refugee Viktoria Berezina’s work “The Voice of Lake Victoria” is inspired by Ugandan climate activist Hilda Flavia Nakabuye and speaks to the inseparable bond between people and nature. The piece is part of Mondo’s #ISHAREHERPOWER campaign, which highlights how climate change affects the everyday lives of women in warmer, lower-income countries. The opening featured Ukrainian singer Anna Fyl and Togolese drummer and singer Senam Tsogbe (TogoSunny), with audio description created by Kai Kunder and Liisi Selg-Räim. The artwork and the event were supported by the Tallinn Department of Culture and Sport and the EU’s NOPLANETB project.

Results

Senam Tsogbe’s drumbeats carried the opening, with cinnamon buns and hot tea waiting nearby.
Listeners stood quietly as the music and the wall’s story became one.
Words about the artwork’s story were spoken before the crowd faced the piece itself.
Applause rolled across the green slope as the new artwork was declared open.
After the speeches, the crowd lingered a while longer, over tea and conversation.
The blue wall rose behind them as the crowd kept talking.
Senam stayed seated by his drum, listening to the murmur of the crowd before him.
The evening closed with Senam alone between drum and wall — a rhythm that lingered long after the opening.
